The One on Saturday

Brr... it's a cold day out there today!

Too bad our pellet stove died today. Papa did some troubleshooting and ordered the broken part online. We should be back in business next week. Thankfully our heat pump is keeping us toasty warm!

So in the meantime, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Mom reminded me that the frozen pond is NOT suitable for strolling.

A box from me should be arriving today via UPS.
A birthday gift and a thank you for the many pizzas. Enjoy!

I promise this WON'T happen.

The One After Dubai

Papa is home at last!! We sure missed him! He was gone for three whole nights - staying in a suite as big as our main floor!! Here at home, I slept on the bed with mom and Phoenix the second night but my bed is cozier. I love my down blanket and snuggly mattress! Speaking of blankets and beds, papa was exhausted when he got home and slept most of the day. He was up for over 30 hours. Yikes! He did share some photos from his trip to Dubai and a video! Who knew you could ski in the desert?!

The One Where it Hails

Papa left for far-away lands late Sunday. That night we had a terrible wind and rain storm! We woke up on Monday to find furniture tumbled over, a greenhouse panel down, a shed door blown open, a board blown off the shed, a board blown off the duck pen snow apparatus... AND several LAKES in the yard! It was a squishy mess out there. I loved it!

Then we had to go inside so mom could work and the rain started again. Boo! THEN the hail started. Now that was interesting!

Wally and Stella didn't seem to mind! They sat out in it without a care in the world! (The camera kept focusing on the BBQ through the glass door so look past it to those blurry white specks in the duck enclosure.)

Mom was getting bundled up to go shuttle them into their house for some protection when suddenly the hail stopped and the skies started to clear! It turned into a beautiful afternoon! All of the rain made the pond a bit murky but even the fish came out of their winter hiding places to enjoy the afternoon. It's hard to see here but mom spotted some babies!

As the sun came out, the boys retreated to their house. Isn't that silly? We coaxed them back out to enjoy the day and mom did some housekeeping while they were playing. This was late afternoon.
All was well!

Then, not long later, at 6... we went out for a post-dinner walk and Stella was a mess! Scrape over his eye, irritated bill... poor dear.

Mom emailed Dr. Lisa and Dr. Stacey. Both experts gave Stella a brief exam this morning and reported their findings to mom. Thank goodness for the two of them! Stacey administered an anti-bacterial solution and Stella looked MUCH improved by the time mom got home tonight. We'll see what tomorrow brings!

I know one thing tomorrow will bring - the best thing! Papa will return home from Dubai!! I bet he has some great pictures for me to share with you. Mom said he'll get home in the morning but we have to be good, quiet pups while he sleeps until the afternoon. He will have been awake for 30+ hours!! I'm off to make sure his pillows are fluffed... and I'll find some earplugs too. JUST in case we get a little rowdy....

The One with the Ice

ICE STORM! I'm happy to report that despite the ice buildup on the trees and surfaces, power has remained on all day and BOTH two-leggers have been home - safe and sound!

I've gotten a couple of questions about Cali's Tunnel. I alluded to said tunnel in my "Walking on Water" post. Without further ado, here is the scoop! Before the big snow storm last month, papa rigged up a contraption to hang a tarp over the enclosure so that the snow wouldn't mound up on the chicken-wire roof, potentially causing a collapse. It worked wonderfully! Mom could easily rake the snow off the tarp periodically to keep the weight off the roof. The catch was that the mountain of snow created by raking it off the tarp buried the bottom of the tarp, creating a tunnel over the bench.

Certainly not visually appealing but mom said, "What are we to do until the snow melts and frees the tarp?" Cali had the answer... eat the way through making a tunnel!

The snow is now melted and the tarp is free to be put away but the two-leggers don't have the heart to take away Cali's mock-agility station. She'll spend such a long time walking in and out of her tunnel!

It must remind her of her agility days!

The One after The Tournament

Whew!! What a week! The two-leggers went to visit our Arizona family for several days, which meant we partied! Our good friend Stacey was here to take care of us and The Crazy Critter Lady even stopped by for some fun! Not to mention the dramatic poker tournament. Cali sure gave Scruffy a run for his money but in the end Scruffy made off with all of the chips. Lucky pup!

Not so lucky: my blogging laptop has given up the good fight and has been retired to mom's laptop graveyard. Why she never gets rid of them, I'll never understand. This has been partly the cause of my delay in posting. I had to find a laptop to borrow!

Last weekend it was nice and warm here AND in Arizona, of course. Pictures are en route but here are some from mom's camera!

The One with the Trick

Mom has been griping that there's not much going on with this frigid weather. She wonders how I manage to scrounge up blog ideas! So I promptly sent papa on a photo trip but he said those pictures won't be ready for me until tomorrow's post. That left me to come up with another blog post idea to really show mom that I'm creative.

After dinner tonight, I thought of the BEST trick ever. I, Zona-- correction... I, Zona the Magnificent, can walk on ::wait for it:: water!! Mom was not pleased. In fact, she told me I cannot walk on water, I can walk on ice and it's not allowed. Is ice not just frozen water?

Let me break it down for you. Mom was bringing straw to Wally and Stella and was soon distracted by Cali and her tunnel (more later). So I took a mosey around the pond, sniffing here and there. Mom looked up and, upon noticing me standing in the middle of the pond, let out a half shocked-laugh and half horrified-whisper of my name. I glanced up fully expecting her to be thrilled with my new trick. She could see it in my face, I was so pleased with myself. Who knew I could walk on water?!

Ice - semantics.

That half laugh immediately joined forces with the horror and she gave me a firm, "OFF." (In hindsight, is "off" really the command for this? Maybe "out?" Or "over?") Regardless, mom rarely has to talk firmly to me so I jumped at her tone and promptly heard a distinct crack. (By the way, I still say that was definitely water under my paws!) Startled, I got the hint and obediently began to move to "shore" safely.

I wasn't sure why mom was suddenly on an adrenaline high so she explained that, frankly, she didn't want to jump into the frozen pond, in 30° weather to save me. When Phoenix and I were back inside, mom grabbed the camera and went out to take pictures of the hole I made. That's when she noticed how much of the pond I covered before she noticed me... oops.

See?! That's water under that snow cover...
