The One After the Holiday

What a full weekend we had! First, mom was home since Monday afternoon, which we always enjoy! Unfortunately, the fun ends tomorrow when she goes back to work. It's probably for the best - we pups are exhausted!

Friday night the two-leggers enjoyed a Thankgsiving-dinner repeat.

Saturday started with papa trekking off to the woods out back to scope out deer. He was unsuccessful. I would go with him to help, I have a knack for stumbling upon deer, but he leaves SO early in the morning. The sun isn't even up yet! I helped him get ready and then cozied up to mom and Phoenix for a bit.

Then the day began! We had a nice breakfast and the two-leggers made a quick run to the aquarium store for some coral to add to the tank!

Pipe Cleaner waking up!
When they returned, papa and some friends went out to the National Forest to continue the quest. The evening brought Greenies and our favorite neighbors for a Wii Party! A great time was had - papa beat mom at boxing for the first time! Mom reminded me that it was not a knock out and her controllers were sluggish. (Excuses?)

Today was the last day of mom's break so we took care of some things around the house and played outside a bit. Phoeny loves playing in the petrified garden. Cali and I generally prefer to wait for her to make her loop around the fence but she clearly loves being so small among the tall plants!

The weather was beautiful! Mom did some more gender research and concluded that we do have two drakes. Evidently, one clear way to determine gender in ducks is by the sound of their quacks! For those interested, these are the quacks of male ducks!

Toward the end of the day, the two-leggers took a scenic drive to the waste transfer station, sadly, one of mom's favorite places. Click here to view some photos from their journey!

The One with a Boy Named... Stella?

Yes, it's true... we are surprised to announce that we have two drakes. Over the last couple of days, we discovered the reason we haven't been blessed with any eggs: we are likely the proud dogs of two male ducks!

Just before Thanksgiving, mom noticed that Stella's tail feathers were starting to curl up instead of laying flat. She did some reading and, apparently, after the first molting season, a male Pekin's "sex feathers" will appear. Not when they reach maturity, as she first believed. Interestingly as "her" feathers began the tell-tale curl, Wally's curl began to flatten out more than usual! Apparently, this phenomenon is common though. Let me show you what I mean...

This was the first day they arrived. Notice Stella's flat feathers. (Wally's curling feathers are a little hard to see in these photos but you can click to enlarge them.)

One month ago: Wally still has a curling feather and Stella's feathers are still pretty flat!

And this is now. The orange arrows in the first couple of photos show you where to look for the curl!

The mystery is Wally... his feathers are now lying mostly flat, he's significantly lighter than Stella, his feet are smaller and he's not as brightly colored. All signs of a female duck... or perhaps his poor nutrition early in life? Not to mention he's noisier!! Mom read that females quack and quack a lot! While males do quack but it's a raspier, less-quack-like sound. Wally certainly quacks... while Stella mostly whistles and "burps." Regardless, I think it's safe to conclude we have two boys living amongst us! (If an egg appears, I'll be sure to update you!)

So now, the count: 4 girls to 3 boys. I wonder if a female puppy will end up on our couch one of these days so us girls can pull further ahead in the numbers again. :: wink wink ::

Either way, Wally is getting a real kick out of all of this!

The One After the Feast

Good evening! I know - two posts in one day is a rarity! But this is a special occasion! We pups are usually on our own for this particular holiday. In fact, Phoenix and I have never spent Thanksgiving with the two-leggers, so we really enjoyed the day! Not to mention the tasty treats! I hope all of my readers and their families - two-legged, furry and feathered - all had a wonderful and blessed day!

Here's our day in summary:

The One with the Thanksgiving Repeat

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for a warm and dry bed each night, fresh food each day, constant love from my family and great doggie friends. I'm also thankful that there are wonderful, caring two-leggers out there who work tirelessly to ensure that as many critters as possible have these things to be thankful for every day.

The One with the Camera

As I mentioned, mom has a new camera. This device haunts me at every turn! I have to say, I think she's getting carried away with the features. Do we really need to see each step of Phoenix's journey from her potty-spot in the trees back to mom's side?

Let me give you an example. By the way, if you scroll fast enough, it looks like she's running right at you!

A white speck doing her business in the tree line.
"All done! Here I come mom!"
"Hang on! I'm coming!""Almost there!"
"Still running!""Don't give up! I'm on my way."
"Whew... here I come!""The wind in my ears... my paws eating up the grass!"
"Here I am!!""Wow, did you see how far I ran? Is it time for a nap?"
See? Is that necessary? And I didn't even post all of the photos in that series! Can you imagine?? It IS cool that the camera can take so many photos per second but it still can't get too many shots of me running... and I wasn't even running at full speed!

Cali and the ducks weren't as exciting today.

Even with the pseudo-paparazzi, the day was fun! We got lots of running in and papa got home before the sun went down for the night! And he's off tomorrow for Turkey Day! What could be better?

The One with the Good, Bad and Worse News

Good News: Phoenix was perfume free and escaped the fate of another bath.

Bad News:
Cali and I were not as lucky. I cannot resist a quick roll in perfume before company arrives.

Worse News: After "the roll," we received word that our company cannot make it for Thanksgiving. Rodger came down with shingles and can't make the trip. We're hopeful for a December visit!

The rain was back today.

So we mostly snuggled...

The two-leggers are getting ready for Thanksgiving later this week! Mom will be home with us until next Monday. Love it!

The One with the Addition

Today was a big day at the park: our family grew!!

I should back up first. This afternoon mom took a quick video of Wally. There is a particular bird that he is just not sure about when he hears it. He'll tilt his head this way and that way trying to figure it out. Just like the Duck DOG he is.

Yes, I know, this video is a little hard to see. But I expect that to change with future videos. Today was mom's birthday and papa bought her a fancy new camera! I was promised some great pictures and videos for my readers. Can't wait to share them with you!

It does take some interesting photos! Look at this one - you can see right through mom!

The camera is a Nikon D5000. So far mom loves it! She also got some Wii Fit items, a cashmere sweater and a collectible Irish ornament from the Arizona peeps, as Papa Michael would say.

Not to mention birthday cash, which Cali snuck into our piggy bank - we puppies need treats! When we pleaded for presents of our own, papa gave us the wrapping paper.

We were not amused.

Oh, right, our new addition! I have to go back to this morning for that! Mom and papa got up early, packed up the truck for a road trip and headed south! Oh, I should mention that after they picked up our bundle of.... joy.... they took the scenic route home and came upon a Captain D's restaurant!

Mom and Dr. Aunt Katie used to spend the summers with MáMá and PáPá. During their many road trips, if they didn't stop at Cracker Barrel, they would try to stop at Captain D's! As these are not in Arizona and few and far between in these parts, mom hasn't been at once since! So her birthday lunch included a side trip down memory lane!

Some irony: Captain D's was first opened in 1969.

What is this ironic? Here she is! Our new addition!!
(Also born in 1969!)

1969 Airstream Globetrotter

After the inspection, papa realized this old girl needs a lot of work. A lot of work. I was told when they cranked it up to hitch it to the truck, water POURED out from the floor board. Maybe she was nervous about the drive? The two-leggers sure were! The tires were pretty dry rotted.

Though papa was a bit apprehensive about the project he was taking on, he was mostly giddy with excitement.

Okay, okay, I know some of you are saying, "A trailer?? That's not part of the family!" Perhaps that is true. But papa sure acts like the aluminum giants are family members. And it got you to read the post, didn't it?
