The One with Two Woolly Worms

Papa found this guy outside! Woolly worm forecasters -- yes, there are such two leggers! There are even town festivals with worm races and fun events to lead up to the prediction of the upcoming winter based on the little caterpillars' bands. Okay, so any way these forecasters can predict, with a boasted 85% accuracy (disputed by scientists but I bet a certain groundhog would side with the Woolly Worms), the weeks of winter based on the thickness and color of the 13 bands and the thickness of the hairs. In summary, I found this:
Orange: Mild
Brown: Cold
Brown with black spot: Possible Ice
Black: Cold/Severe Cold and Snow
My friend has NO brown!! Does that mean another snowy winter?? I hope so!!

It's interesting... I have a Woolly Bear inside too!

  1. Our snow went and disdapeered on mee todays and it has given mee da sads cos mee lovved it, ifs yoo gets lots can yoo send mee some pleese

  2. We have tons of snow here, stop by and take some home with you if you want some.

I saw a white one once. It seems like it had a yellow stripe or two although I could be wrong. It's been awhile since I saw it.

  3. How funny that you would find a wooly-worm, and I found one yesterday that was all black too--I wonder what they are trying to tell us? Whatever it is, I'm not listening!

    I love your snow picture--We're expecting flurries...maybe.

  4. I've had brown and blakhk ones!

One of them wasn't much bigger than a tikh-takh!

Is there any snow in your world tonight?

  5. Thanks for all that information - we are all headed outside to find lots of those black wooly ones - we so want lots of snow.

  7. Zona,

  8. I gots those here too. Mine had tiny Black heads and tiny black butts. So far they are right... It is really cold here now and we have a skift of snow on the ground. BAH you can keep it all. I had to wear my camo coat for playing out this afternoon. brrrrrrr

  9. We haven't seen any wooly bears here besides Morgan! Mom says she's heard the same thing about them predicting the winter, though. We got our first snow today and it is glorious!

  10. We had snow today, too! My tummy is bothering me so mama kept me inside, but it sure looked pretty!

    Your pal, Pip

  11. Uh, I has nevers seen those or heard bouts theres ability to predict da weathers. We must not get out much...hehehe! But, I will gladly take a groundhog (wink wink)!

  12. We think your wooly bear is much cuter!

  13. We're with Mack. We like the wooly bear at your house. We've never seen a wooly critter like the one in the top picture. Furry interesting post about them predicting the weather. Also like the fun in the snow pic of youall playing.

  15. Hardly any snow here!

We've started a week of giveaways at, so stop by & you could be a winner!

    Nubbin wiggles,

  16. Oh goodness... from the looks of that wooly worm it's going to be a long winter!

  17. I have never heard this! So fun and interesting... wait please find one that says LESS SNOW :(

  18. I have no idea what a woolie worm is. I don't know if we have them where I live. I'm on the West Coast in Southern California. I know they do get snow n the mountains, but we're not in the mountains. I've never seen snow. It sure looks fun!

  19. Hi Cali! Wow we never heard of those woolly worms before - and we had no idea that you could figure out the winter based on their fur color! We wish it had been orange - we don't like the cold and snow very much! But it does seem to be correct so far!

  20. Heehee! I luved both those Woolly worms but I think the second one is my favoritest! (We don't have woolly worms here but if we did, they'd prolly have little bathing suits on or something. I'm pretty sure winter is NEVER gonna gets to Collie-rado.)

    Wiggles & Wags,

  21. Hey Zona Girl!
Great pix of your crawling buddy. This is about the only kinda worm that doesn't scare me! BOL I hope we get tons of snow this year...but my peeps hate it. Love your pix of zoomies in the snow.
    Grr and a Smitten Woof,

  22. We always watch for signs from our nature friends to see what winter will be like. The more fur they have then usually the colder the winter....atleast that is what we think....Enjoy the snow!

  23. It looks like it's gonna be a cold one!

    Woofs and Kisses!
